Young Canada Works (YCW) assists employers in the creation of jobs for students and recent graduates. Summer jobs and internships give young people across Canada access to unique opportunities to learn and work in the heritage field while earning money for their education.
Since 1998, the Heritage Canada Foundation, in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage, has administered financial contributions under the YCW program. As part of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy, this program assists employers in the creation of jobs for students and recent graduates.
The Foundation delivers funding for Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations, a summer employment program, as well as Building Careers in Heritage, an internship program for graduates.
In 2007, the Heritage Canada Foundation assisted in the creation of 91 summer positions and four internship positions from coast to coast! We thank all employers, students and graduate interns for their participation, which has resulted in another successful year of YCW.
ON-SITE WITH YCW
Each year, the YCW Coordinator visits some of the organizations and interviews the students and their supervisors. In August 2007 on-site interviews were conducted with four heritage organizations based in PEI and one in Sackville, NB. All of the students interviewed showed enthusiasm for their summer jobs, each of them grateful for finding employment in jobs related to their fields of study. Their supervisors—representatives of mainly non-profit organizations—spoke of their appreciation for the YCW program’s support, and several emphasized that without such support they would not have been able to run their summer projects.

WHAT IS YCW IN HERITAGE ORGANIZATIONS?
YCW in Heritage Organizations is a summer program that gives students the opportunity to learn about Canada's
history and cultural heritage by assisting heritage organizations and agencies
to create summer jobs for students from the ages of 16 to 30.
Eligibility
Registered charities, non-profit organizations, aboriginal institutions, band/tribal councils working in the field of heritage,
particularly in the preservation of heritage buildings and sites.
Conditions
Each YCW position will last four to sixteen weeks and
is normally eligible for funding of up to 75% of the total cost
of the position. Students must be between the ages of 16 and 30,
and priority should be given to students returning to school.
WHAT IS YCW AT BUILDING CAREERS IN HERITAGE?
YCW at Building Careers in Heritage helps unemployed or underemployed graduates
(up to the age of 30) acquire hands-on experience and build advanced skills
in career-related work. The program is intended to help recent college and university graduates make the
transition to heritage and arts-related trades and professions in Canada.
Work experiences last from 4 to 12 consecutive months (a minimum duration
of 4 consecutive months for internships in Canada).
Please note that the Heritage Canada Foundation only accepts applications
for internships within Canada.
