Suggestions for Heritage Day Activities

Groups and Organizations

  1. Arrange Heritage Tours of historic areas or landmarks—especially those related to the Heritage Day theme—for the general public to enjoy.
  2. Arrange a special tour of a heritage property not normally open to the public, which is related to the Heritage Day theme.
  3. Organize displays on: the history and development of your area; antiques and artefacts; photographs; clothing; musical instruments; sports equipment; and more.
  4. Prepare and supply the media with short reports on interesting aspects of the history of your local area with reference to the Heritage Day theme, and request they be broadcast as public service announcements on Heritage Day.
  5. Write a letter to the editor.
  6. Contact the mayor of your community and request that a Heritage Day proclamation be announced. Request that the Council consider topics related to heritage conservation and issue a statement on the community’s plans to protect heritage properties. Help arrange the necessary publicity for these events.
  7. Organize a lecture on architecturally noteworthy buildings in your community.
  8. Use social media to spread the word about your planned Heritage Day activities.

Individuals

  1. Stop. Look around you and appreciate the heritage of your community.
  2. Take a personal tour of a historic area or building in your area.
  3. Visit a heritage property or museum.
  4. Become informed and involved in the preservation effort in your community. Talk to someone who shares your concern for architectural preservation.

  6. Become a member of the Heritage Canada Foundation or make a donation as a demonstration of your support. If you are a member, speak to a friend about joining or making a donation to our common cause.
  7. Get involved with your local heritage group.
